WORLD FIRST IN COKE OVEN GAS TREATMENT
Le Gaz Intégral has put into operation a plant for the treatment of
gas containing ammonia and hydrogen sulphide in the coke oven plant
located at FOS S/MER, France,
of ARCELOR (SOLLAC USINOR), the largest steel producer of the world.
Using a novel and unique process, this unit first of its
kind, recovers 12 tpd of sulphur in a molten form while ammonia is
destroyed.
This unit reduces strongly the emissions of the coke oven plant with
an efficiency much higher than conventional processes.
Le Gaz Integral (www.gazintegral.com) is an E and C company active in
waste gas treatment and sulphur recovery units.

NEW PROCESS for SULFUR
RECOVERY in COKE PRODUCTION PLANTS.
It is now possible to treat
residual gases of the desulfurization of coke oven gas
without the need of a catalytic step to dissociate the
ammonia of the gaz.
The process used allows to treat humid effluents containing
ammonia with small concentrations in H2S, with very high
efficiencies in recovering sulfur under liquid form.
Le Gaz Integral, specialist in
desulfurization of gas effluents, offers a new type of
modified Claus Unit working thermally without a catalytic
ammonia destruction step in the furnace. Well-known in the
field of refineries, this technique allows to recover pure
sulphur and is adapted, in this case, to gases containing
not only H2S and water, but very high content of ammonia
that must be destroyed. In addition to this ammonia presence,
this unit also has the particularity to treat flows that are
not highly concentrated in H2S.

The reaction said of “Claus”, consisting in several
reactions leading to convert H2S into sulphur, is here
optimised. Thus, the combustion, first step in a Claus Unit,
gives a high temperature that not only enables the
destruction of ammonia but also favours the direct
dissociation of H2S into sulphur. Moreover, the dilution of
the components is limited and this favours the Claus
reaction and the conversion of H2S into liquid sulphur. This
is particularly important for these gases that are naturally
not highly concentrated. The sulphur recovered (a few tons
per day for a coke plant for example) is pure and in liquid
form.
Comparing with the catalytic ammonia destruction
processes used until now, the yield is improved of more than
10%. The unit is also more compact, with savings in Capital
expenditure.
